Hi, Andrea Shepherd here.
I always laugh a little to myself when I get to the "tell us something about yourself" on one of my websites.
After much contemplation about "what to write" and composing some 1400 drafts,.. I have come to the conclusion that I really only have three options:
You guess which one I decided to go with.
What would you like to know?
✅ I am a Christian, married for 25 years to the love of my life. #LOML ð???
✅ We have three children, all girls and they are 18, 11, & 5 at the time of this writing.
✅ We live in Southern California.
✅ I homeschool our daughters 🍎🍎🍎 (just graduated our 18 year old June 2018!) and I run Insurance Web Designs full-time.
My first job was as a CSR for a State Farm agent in Brentwood, CA. I moved a few times during my 20's and always managed to find an insurance agent who needed a great CSR!
Later, I went thru the Farmers Agent Training Program and spent my whole first year x-dating homeowners insurance, because that's what my manager told me to do.
As "luck" would have it, the Northridge Earthquake hit about a month before my first year in training was complete. With that earthquake brought an insurance moratorium which effectively devasted my budding insurance business.
At the time, I was required to have $50k 💰💰💰💰💰 in the bank in order to join the program! That was my "fall-back" money to be sure I could LIVE while I was in the training program.
I didn't have another year of ZERO income in me (or in the bank!) so I chose to leave the program.
The internet 💻 was brand new back then! I mean like... brand spankin new! (I know, I know, I am giving up my age - oh well!) LOL 😜
I was interested in it and decided I wanted to be an online marketer. Although, that "title" didn't really exist at the time... it is ultimately the description that fits best.
I spent the following three or four years learning how to code websites, in html, by hand! That's the equivalent of teaching yourself to rate an auto policy, using those massive rating manuals... old school. It was challenging, but fun!
What happened next?
That's when I started my first freelance web design business. It was called Shepherd Design & Development. I designed websites for small businesses.
My first clients were a young couple starting an ecommerce business reselling kitsch stuff like garden gnomes and such.
My second client was a janitorial service and my first totally custom ecommerce website with flash. (If you don't know, "flash" was a BIG DEAL way back when and a ton of websites were built using ONLY flash! Very bad for SEO these days, but back then... it was all the rage.) That job paid over $20,000!
I spent several years designing websites for just about anybody that could afford to hire me.
I wound up mostly doing celebrity websites, I lived in Los Angeles afterall, so it was just a matter of meeting one and getting referrals for the rest.
But... I got bored!
I also knew that I didn't want to be a "Jane of all trades, master of none".
I wanted to specialize...
But specialize in what?
My insurance background still lingered in the back of my mind.
I "Yahoo'd" (since Google didn't exist yet - actually, it did exist, it just wasn't Google as we know it today... I was still using Yahoo as my primary search engine) "websites for insurance agents" one day and came up with Zip! Zilch! Nada!
Nothing existed specifically for insurance agents!
The dream was born... and so was Insurance Web Designs!
I would start designing websites for insurance agents.
